How the multimillion dollar investment in Hervey Bay tourism infrastructure is set to change the face of Urangan.

    A $60 million investment in Hervey Bay tourism infrastructure is set to change the face of Urangan Marina.

    The investment, which has been kickstarted by the State Government, has the potential to create more than 200 local jobs and extensive economic opportunities for the Fraser Coast region.

    The facilitation agreement with Hervey Bay Boat Club and Club Property Solutions signals an important step in the development of Marina Square at Urangan Harbour.

    Treasurer and Minister Investment Cameron Dick said stimulating regional jobs growth is crucial for Queensland’s future.

    “Decisions like this drive Queensland’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan,” Mr Dick said.

    “They ensure we power out of this pandemic with the projects needed to keep Queenslanders in secure jobs.

    “The centrepiece of Marina Square is a 144-room, four-star hotel, the construction of which would see 210 jobs created: 175 during the build and 35 full-time roles in the long-term.

    “Covid won’t be here forever, so we want to make sure places like Hervey Bay have the infrastructure needed to support our local economies.”

    Marina Square is earmarked for 1.57 ha of state-owned land currently leased to Hervey Bay Boat Club, with construction anticipated to begin mid-2022.

    Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the project will prove a boost for local jobs and apprenticeships.

    “This will mean more work for our tradies and the local construction industry, and that will drive growth in our local tourism industries,” Mr Tantari said.

    “It will also commence the redevelopment of the boat harbour that has been talked about for some time, enhancing Hervey Bay’s reputation as the premium whale watching destination in Australia.”

    Hervey Bay Boat Club General Manager Tony Bonello said it’s always been the club’s aim to play a significant role in making the harbour all it can be for the community and visitors to the region.

    “Urangan Harbour isn’t just one of the most beautiful places on the Fraser Coast, it’s the club’s neighbourhood, its home,” Mr Bonello said.

    “That’s why we moved to acquire the lease when it became available. We wanted to work with council and the community to shape a positive future for the harbour.”

    Club Property Solutions Director Greg Wilson said while site zoning allows for development up to 30-levels, the focus is on minimising scale while maximising amenity and precinct appeal.

    “The concept has been developed in close consultation with council,” Mr Wilson said,

    “It’s been our objective to ensure the scheme delivers fully on the community’s vision for activation of the precinct and on current and emerging needs.”

    Mr Dick said the project will unlock further private sector investment in Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Urangan Harbour Master Plan, with space for residential apartments, a conference and events centre, and recreational activities.

    “The Fraser Coast is growing rapidly and has a huge amount to offer visitors, which is why holiday accommodation is in high demand locally,” he said.

    “Facilitating sustainable private sector investment in places like Hervey Bay will help unlock a new era of opportunity for Queensland.”

    Sydneysiders and Melburnians, put aside your equally outstanding flat whites for a moment. Stop bickering about whether great beaches beat cool laneways (they do) and desist from debating whether all baristas require waxed moustaches (ideally).

    Because Brisbane is closing in on the title of Australia’s best city, and we must join forces to keep this subtropical upstart in its place.

    Time  magazine recently named Brisvegas on its “World’s Greatest Places” list, and omitted our cities. It’s a huge shock (and who knew they still published Time  magazine?). But they might be onto something.

    Time  points to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be hosted in the maroon metropolis. Brisbane will do a fine job, even though it’ll baffle the world when rugby league is added to the schedule and Queensland is allowed to field its own team.

    Time’s  most radical claim is that Brisbane is worth visiting now, but tourism is surging. Not only did Lin-Manuel Miranda recently drop in to catch Hamilton , but hundreds of Hamilfans flew up to watch his interview with Leigh Sales (presumably unaware that it would subsequently arrive on iView for free).
